(Anti-) Observation

Harry Wells

A Rare Look Inside the Hidden World of Cold War Tradecraft

About this book

What did professional surveillance look like before cameras, drones, and digital tracking? How did intelligence officers maintain constant observation of a target using nothing more than patience, teamwork, and meticulous attention to detail — and how could an insider use that same knowledge to evade detection?

The first half of this volume reproduces a declassified British Security Service (MI5) observation manual, originally used to train personnel in the art of physical surveillance: street surveillance, suspect tracking, public-transport monitoring, contact identification, observation reporting, and operational discipline.

The second half reads those same methods through the eyes of Anthony Blunt — art historian, senior MI5 officer, and member of the Cambridge spy ring — reconstructing how an individual with intimate knowledge of British surveillance could identify and exploit the system's weaknesses. This comparative framework, the "Blunt Protocol," shows how surveillance and countersurveillance mirrored and challenged one another across the Cold War.

A historical study of tradecraft and organizational behavior — not a modern operational guide.
